DARJEELING: In a latest development, the Trinamool Congress-led government of West Bengal has withdrawn more than 70 cases that were filed against Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supremo Bimal Gurung in 2017. The cases were filed after the Gorkha leader's supporters were accused of killing a policeman. Gurung had gone absconding after the incident.

It needs mention here that both factions of the GJM — one led by Bimal Gurung and the other one by Benoy Tamang — have lent their support to the ruling Trinamool Congress party.

While both GJM factions are on the same page when it comes to supporting TMC, Bimal Gurung and Benoy Tamang are still at odds.

It needs mention here that the leader, who had spearheaded the 'separate state Gorkhaland' movement, last Tuesday addressed his first public rally after three-and-a-half years in Kurseong, near Darjeeling in West Bengal.

According to sources, the Gorkha leader is hoping for a turnaround in his political fortunes with Assembly election drawing close and has promised to "defeat" the BJP in the state.

Bimal Gurung resurfaced in October 2020 in Kolkata where he announced that the GJM will end its association with the NDA, which had once promised to grant its demand for a separate state. After resurfacing, Gurung had also pledged support for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
