Man burns alive family members after daughter marries against his will in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A man in Pakistan allegedly burned alive seven members of his own family, including his two daughters and four grandkids in a horrible case of honour killing after one of the women married against his wishes.

According to reports, the accused man has been identified as Manzoor Hussain.

The incident took place in Pakistan’s Punjab province’s Muzaffargarh area, where Hussain set fire to a house where his daughters Fauzia Bibi and Khurshid Mai were living with their families.

The fire killed Bibi, her infant child, Mai, and her husband, and their four children.

The only survivor of the arson attack is Bibi’s husband Mehboob Ahmad who later filed a police report against his father-in-law Manzoor Hussain and his son Sabir Hussain.

Ahmad said to police, “I had to go to Multan on business. When I returned home and was close to my house, it was set ablaze. Manzoor Hussain and Sabir Hussain were seen fleeing the scene.

The two suspects are being hunted by police.

According to reports of Reuters, the incident is the result of the rivalry between the two families over the love marriage.

Mehboob Ahmad said in his police statement that he and Bibi had a love marriage in 2020.

This infuriated Manzoor Hussain, who was opposed to the union.

An honour killing is when a member of a family or social group is murdered by family or community members who believe the victim has brought discredit to the family or society. The victim’s death is seen as a chance to restore the family’s reputation and honor.

Pakistan has the highest reported and estimated the number of honour killings per capita of any country in the world, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all honour killings worldwide (1,000 out of the 5,000 per year total).
