BAKSA: The man-elephant conflict has taken a shocking turn along Assam's border with neighbouring Bhutan. Locals of a village situated in Baksa near the Bhutan border were on Wednesday night terrorized by a starving herd of elephants that had ventured into the village searching for food.

On Wednesday, a herd of elephants that had descended from nearby hills seeking food, entered Narayanpur in Kauli -- a small village inhabited by a small number of locals. Needless to say, this caused a hue-and-cry in the region, with locals trying to frighten the elephants by burning torches.

However, the angry herd would not be deterred. The raging herd laid waste to several bighas of farms where crops (such as rice, paan leaves etc) were being cultivated. This continued for the entirety of the night, and the herd only left in the morning -- after feasting to its heart's delight.

The man-elephant conflict in this region goes back several years. For many years, the locals of Assam's Baksa have been faced with the treat of being run over by jumbos peeved at the encroachment of humans on forest land. The situation usually turns dire when these hungry elephants ransack human settlements in search of food. Over the years, several deaths have been reported from these areas.
