A clash had broken between the locals of Chassad and Sampui after a group of unknown miscreants burned down the Jhum fields, which were being readied for this year's cultivation. The villagers of Chassad (Kuki) came into direct clash with those of Sampui.

Groups of Chassad villagers armed with lethal weapons had also blocked the Sampui junction. Earlier in the day, even the police personnel were not allowed to perform their duties in the area. Situation worsened on Monday after two vehicles, heading towards Kamjong were stopped and not allowed to pass through.

The State Government, in order to bring the situation under control, on Monday ordered the suspension of internet services for three days following the rising tension between the two groups in Manipur's Ukhrul. The restriction was hastily proposed after an enraged mob damaged public and private property on Monday.

A notification issued by the Manipur Government, it stated, "the situation at Chassad village of Kamjong district has worsened and deteriorated during the last couple of days in the aftermath of the incident at Chassad involving two communities.”

"Whereas, the unfortunate incidents have been used by anti-social elements to vitiate the atmosphere further by using social media such as WhatsApp and Facebook, Instagram extensively for transmission of hate video messages and images to incite the public. The social media has also become handy tool for rumour mongers and is being used to incite the general public. Unless the use of internet/mobile data is curbed temporarily, there is likelihood of serious repercussions in the law and order and the possibilities of communal violence in the State,” it read.

All Mobile Service providers are hereby directed to ensure compliance of this order.”
