Imphal, July 16, 2019:

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh attended the Award distribution ceremony in connection with seizure of drugs by Manipur Police held at Banquet Hall of 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles here on Tuesday.

Speaking as Chief Guest of the function, the Chief Minister said that the drug menace will have an adverse affect on the present and future generation. In the last two years, 965 persons have been arrested in connection with the drug cases in the State, he added.

He mentioned, unlike the previous regime, various CSOs and local clubs have started approaching the present government to conduct crackdown against the illicit drug business and drug menace in different areas of the State.

Police-Public relationship needs to be strengthened and regular interactive programs should be held between the Police and public, he said.

Mentioning some of the initiatives of the government in the last two years, he stated that the trust deficit between the hills and valley has been minimized, delivering good governance at grassroots, maintaining a good relationship between the public and government by introducing various initiatives like Meeyamgi Numit, Hill Leaders' Day, Go to Hills, Go to Village mission etc.

The law and order situation has been improved and normalcy has returned, he added. Since its inception, the present government has been focussing on 'mission oriented' programmes and schemes for the welfare of the people, he added.

The Chief Minister expressed that the objective of a government is to deliver good governance and fulfil the aspirations and wishes of the people of the State. There should be a healthy relationship between the government and its people, he added. He stated that the government has begun a survey in areas where minority communities reside like Lilong, Mayang, Imphal etc to find out the root causes of drug peddling, drug addicts, the livelihood and living conditions etc.

Due to lack of alternative livelihood, such issue like illegal drug business and drug peddling are rampant in these areas, he added. He said that, till now, around 2500 families were identified which are economically weak and poor. CMHT and PMJAY cards have been given to those family members.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister handed over the Chief Minister's Commendation Certificates and Incentive Awards to 59 Police Officers and Personnel. A short video on the activities and achievements of Manipur Police on 'War against Drugs' was also played during the function.
