Manipur-Based Rainforest Club Tamenglong Lauded by United Nations

The Manipur based Rainforest Club Tamenglong (RCT) has been officially recognized as a World Environment Day hero by the United Nations Environment Programme.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a programme [1]of the United Nations, coordinates the organization's environmental activities and assists developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies and practices. UNEP is alternatively named UN Environment.

The UN Environment, congratulated RCT for their ‘fight to Beat Air Pollution’ and also thanked them for their participation in the ‘World Environment Day’ efforts.

RCT, a Tamenglong based non-profit organisation is formed by a group of volunteers who actively thrive for a better Tamenglong by actively campaigning to preserve the environment.

The RCT is noted for Amur falcon festival since November 25, 2015 to spread across the state of Manipur the need to protect Amur falcon (Falco Amurensis) and it’s roosting and feeding habitat in Tamenglong District in collaboration with Forest Department, Manipur.

The World Environment Day, which is celebrated on the 5th June every year, was first held in 1974 and has ever since been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on various emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. This is an Initiative by the United Nations and is celebrated in different locations each time.

Back in 1974, this event was hosted by Spokane, United States for which the theme was “Only one Earth during Expo '74”.

It was only in 2011 that India hosted it’s first World Environment Day with the theme “Forests: Nature at your Service”. This year, the event was celebrated in China and the topic was “Beat Air Pollution”.
