Manipur by-elections underway, fate of 11 candidates to be decided today

Imphal: Polling is underway for the by-elections to 4 Assembly Constituencies in Manipur on Saturday (November 7). This has been confirmed by Election Commission officials in Manipur.

The crucial by polls to the four Assembly Constituencies in the State -- Liling and Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal, Wangoi in Imphal West, and Saitu in Kangpokpi -- will decide the fates of as many as 11 candifdates.

More than 1.35 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 203 polling stations in the by-elections.

According to reports, optional postal ballot facility has been provided for electors above 80 years of age, COVID-19 patients and voters quarantined at different centres.

Voters with COVID-19 related symptoms will be allowed to vote in the last hour of the poll.

All polling personnel have been provided with personal protection equipment (PPE) in view of the ongoing. Voting will continue till 5 pm, and counting of votes will be conducted on November 10.

BJP has already secured a win as its candidate Ginsuanhau has won unopposed from the Singhat Constituency in Churachandpur.

Wangjing Tentha, Wangoi, and Lilong are locked in a three-cornered contest, while the BJP and Congress are locked in a tense fight in Saitu.
Conrad Sangma-led National People's Party (NPP) has also entered the election by fielding candidate Khuraijam Loken Singh from Wangoi. Sangma was recently witnessed campaigning for the party candidate in Wangoi.

As of now, 13 seats out of the total 60-member Manipur Assembly are vacant following the resignation and disqualification of legislators. While the BJP has 19 MLA, the main Opposition Congress has 18 MLAs.

According to sources, one more MLA can be added to the list of the BJP, as Manipur's High Court declared BJP candidate from Kakching M Ramenshwar Singh, as elected.
