Imphal, July 02, 2019:

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has urged the people to promote, encourage and create awareness about the benefits of afforestation, reiterating his appeals to his subjects to preserve and conserve the forest area so that natural calamities such as floods, landslides, and drought could be prevented.

Addressing the gathering at the State level 70th 'Van Mahotsava' celebration, N. Biren Singh said that people need to act now if the future generation has to be saved.

The event was organised by Department of Forest at Peace Ground, Churachandpur district on Monday.

The Chief Minister said that the main idea of organising the State level Van Mahotsava in hill districts from last year was to sensitise the people of hill districts that climate change and global warming have now affected the State as well.

Forest areas especially in hill districts of the State are shrinking fast due to rampant deforestation, he said and observed that that no Government effort would bring result without people’s support and awareness.

The recently-launched 'Green Mission Manipur' would soon be expanded across the State, and people need to take proactive role in it, he added.

Mentioning that mass participation is needed to save the environment, N. Biren urged the people to preserve and conserve the forest area so that natural calamities such as floods, landslides, and drought could be prevented. He urged the people to promote, encourage and create awareness about the benefits of afforestation.

N. Biren said that he is glad to learn that CSOs and student organisations are ready to stop sand or pebble quarrying activities and poppy plantation in Churachandpur district. He also mentioned about the ill effects of usage of chemical fertilizers in poppy plantation that leads to degradation of the soil.
