Manipur Congress calls Centre out for their conflicting stance over COVID-19 situation in state

GUWAHATI: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has called out the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Government over its 'double standard' on the COVID-19 situation in the state of Manipur.

Manipur is one of the six states of India, where the Union Health Ministry has rushed teams for COVID-19 control and containment measures, along with another northeastern state Arunachal Pradesh.

The positivity rate of Manipur is 15.5 per cent in the last 24 hours but DoNER Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Saturday said that there is a progressive decline in COVID cases in all the Northeastern States except Meghalaya and the positivity rate has fallen to 2.94 per cent in the last 48 hours from 3.96 per cent previously.

"How could you compare COVID-19 positivity rate region-wise? Is it fair? Have we ever heard of something like the positivity rate of South India or the positivity rate of North India?" expressed Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, spokesperson of MPCC, speaking with InsideNE.

Meitei informed, "The team in Manipur under Union Health Minister Dr. Harvardhan has asserted that the positivity rate of Manipur has risen to 15.5 percent now and there is no sign of it coming down. Almost 10 to 15 people dying in the state daily."

"Why are there two ministers saying two different things? When will the government speak in one voice?" asked Meitei.

Spokesperson Meitei also informed InsideNE that the 10 days vaccination drive kickstarted by the Centre from June 21 to 30 was not on war footing manner either.

Manipur has logged 689 new cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours and as many as 13 people succumbed to the virus during the period.

The state death toll of Manipur stands at 1,188 out of 71,643 positive cases so far.

"Manipur is relatively a smaller state population-wise. The situation could have been contained at an earlier stage if it was maintained right," Meitei said.
