Manipur Demands Assam-Like NRC from Centre: Manipur CM

Guwahati, September 10, 2019:

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday raised the demand for an Assam-like National Register of Citizens (NRC) in his State on Monday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 4th Convention of the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) here today, he said that the Manipur has already approved the resolution for an NRC-like exercise in the State.

Singh said that many of the States in the northeast need something similar to the Assam NRC to determine the bona fide citizens. He further added that the government of Manipur has already taken a decision in the cabinet to have it.

Upon being asked how such an exercise will be implemented, he said that it will be done through the central government. "Assam is doing it under the supervision of the Supreme Court. So we are requesting the central government and it will be done by them", he said.
