Manipur: Govindas Konthoujam resigns from Assembly & Congress; likely for being deprived of CLP leadership

AIZAWL: Days after resigning from the presidential position of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Govindas Konthoujam, a six-time legislator from Bishnupur, has resigned from the Manipur Legislative Assembly as well as from the party membership giving fuel to rumours that he is headed to the rival Bharatiya Janata Party camp.

Earlier, though MPCC has denied the rumours of Konthoujam joining the saffron party after his resignation, speculations were doing the rounds that Kouthoujam was unhappy over not being offered the role of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.

Konthoujam submitted his letter of resignation just before noon to the Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker Khemchand Singh.

Later, he submitted his resignation from the primary membership of INC to MPCC interim president Nameirakpam Loken.

Konthoujam tendered his resignation from MPCC presidential post on July 20.

Konthoujam, a former Cabinet minister, was appointed as the president of MPCC last December by Sonia Gandhi herself.
