IMPHAL: In one of the more astonishing incidents, a journalist from the north-eastern state Manipur was assaulted by a group of 20-25 masked men on October 24.

The victim has been identified as Elangbam Rameshwar (42), who works as a Thoubal correspondent of Naharolgi Thoudang regional daily newspaper, which is published from Imphal.

He is also vice president of Thoubal District Working Journalist Union (TDWJU).

According to reports, the rural reporter was assaulted at his home in the Heirok area. His house had also been vandalized by the assailants, according to reports.

The Scribe has been admitted to the Thoubal District Hospital, where he is recovering from his injuries.

 

Several political parties, civil society organizations, and media organizations have condemned the attack, which is thought to be linked to the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections early next year.

However, the handiwork was allegedly masterminded by some Congress workers in the Thoubal locality of the north-eastern State.

According to a family member of the reporter, the group of miscreants came to visit Rameshwar and then started hitting him after some discussions, showing a 'wrong/biased report' by him on Naharolgi Thoudang. When his neighbors arrived to save him, the group fled.

 

Meanwhile, the Indian Journalist Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the incident of assault on Rameshwar and urged State chief Minister N Biren Singh to book the culprits under the law.

 

The national union of scribes also wished for the early recovery of Elangbam Rameshwar.

"Assaulting a scribe for his work is nothing more than an attack on journalistic freedom. The concerned authority must ensure identifying the perpetrators and punishing them in accordance with the law," said IJU president K. Sreenivas Reddy and secretary general Balwinder Singh Jammu in a statement, adding that political parties must adhere to the principle of respecting public voices, even if they are not favorable to them, especially as the State prepares for assembly elections.
