Manipur Karate champion compelled to quit career due to poverty

Koijam Usharani, an International- level karate player from Manipur had to quit her sports career and forced to do odd jobs to make the ends meet.

IMPHAL: Koijam Usharani, an International- level karate player from Manipur had to quit her sports career and forced to do odd jobs to make the ends meet.

According to a report, Usharani brought laurels to the state by winning four gold medals in international championships and bagged several medals on national and regional levels as well.

After not receiving any financial assistance from the government, she was compelled to quit her career in Karate.

“I have been selected innumerable times for International games but I have missed all opportunities due to financial constraints. And that discouraged me to play further for the country. I would like to request the government to help me and other players who are struggling like me,” she said in a report.

She stated that she sulked into depression after quitting Karate and her mother's sudden death added to her woes making the situation even worse.

Her sister-in-law has been striving to meet the expenses by working in a stone-crushing unit where she earns Rs 300 per day.

Seeking government's assistance, Usharani urged the government to encourage and support regional players so that their talent and potentials do not go in vain.

Here it is to be noted that the Union sports ministry working vigorously towards realizing the country’s sporting potential and developing infrastructure as well. However, time and again, sportspersons have been reported to be living in heart-wrenching conditions.
