Manipur: Protesters Demand Govt to Disclose Outcome of ‘Naga Peace Agreement’

Imphal, November 10, 2019:

The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has continued its series of protests in the state demanding the release of the peace agreement concluded between the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) and the Centre.

COCOMI, which is a joint body of major civil society organisations of Manipur, has been protesting since October 31. Its concern is that the peace agreement should not impact the integrity of the state.

Alert protests were carried out at Kshetri Awang Leikai Mina Bazar organised by United Women Rights Defenders, Khongman Zone- 4 and 5. Thoubal District Transporters’ Union and Wangjing Magic drivers, Wingers’ drivers and Diesel Auto drivers also staged the alert sit-in protests at Thoubal and Wangjing.

Students of Khongjom Standard English School, reportedly, formed a human chain and carried out a rally with slogans like – ‘Long Live Manipur’, ‘No one can harm the territorial integrity of Manipur’ and many more. The women folk also joined the alert protests organised at Pishum Thong-Keishamthong route.

Transporters of the Imphal-Moreh route have also announced to join COCOMI in the protest. They will halt the services on Monday, according to reports. Failure of joining the protests will result in penalty and cancellation of permits for upto three months have been announced by the transporters’ body.

The agitation by COCOMI came up sensing trouble in the state at a crucial point of Naga ‘Peace Talks’. People have been carrying out protests in the past few weeks fearing threat to integrity in the state.
