IMPHAL: The Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), a state government undertaking will hold golden jubilee of Manipuri cinema on April 9 at the palace auditorium, MSFDS, Palace Gate, Imphal East. The celebration will culminate on the same day.

MSFDS, in association with Film Forum Manipur has been observing this celebration as the Mami Numit every year.

The celebration committee envisages the celebration as an event to encourage film practice in Manipur at all levels thereby further advancing it to a sustainable growth, said a release

‘Matamgi Manipur’ the first Manipuri feature film was released on April 9 in the year 1972.

The celebration is anticipated to amplify the local storytelling voices for global inspiration.

The celebration will be inaugurated by the chief minister N Biren Singh.

The unveiling of a memorial stone dedicated to Manipuri cine-workers and artists, the opening of the Manipur Cine Archive and Museum, film screenings, cine-dialogue, and workshops are among the main highlights of the festival.

A specially curated package of Manipuri cinema from the last five decades will also be screened at the event.

Altogether, nine Manipuri feature films, 15 short & documentaries films, and in the Northeast Focus section, five feature films and three documentaries will be screened.

Films made by Northeast filmmakers, both fiction and non-fiction, will be screened in this segment.

Rima Das, an internationally renowned Assamese filmmaker, and her film Bulbul Can Sing are a highlight.She will present the film and will also take part in the Cine-Dialogue.

Other emerging filmmakers like Dominic Sangma of Meghalaya, Kivini Shohe and Yapangnaro Longkumer of Nagaland, Sange Dorjee of Arunachal Pradesh, and Dawa Lepcha of Sikkim along with their films are also the added attraction.

The aim of this segment is to weave together the variety of voices represented by the Northeast storytellers.

Cine-Dialogue is also an important part of the first phase of the celebration.

Cinema as an expressive art having abilities to progress human thoughts and worldviews, its practitioners will take the opportunity to deliberate on issues of pressing concern. It will also be joined by eminent scholars and social commentators of the state.

The year-long celebration will also include Introspection of Manipuri cinema, comparative studies of Manipuri Cinema, masterclasses, book publication, district level film festivals, Manipuri film screenings at different institutes and cities across the country, film quiz completions for students, film sensitisation with basic skill training modules at schools and colleges, mobile filmmaking competition, launching of the competitive annual Imphal International film festival, and launching of Manipur film promotional fund etc.

The event will be celebrated by following the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the state health department, assured the organizers.
