GUWAHATI: Manipur MP Leishemba Sanajaoba in Zero Hour of Parliament Budget Session put up the inclusion of the Manipuri language (or Meeteilol) in Manipuri script (Meetei Mayek) in Indian currency notes.

 

Addressing the Chairman, Venkaiah Naidu, Sanajaoba, the titular king of the state who was recently elected to the Rajya Sabha on a BJP ticket, said, "Manipuri language meaning Meeteilol was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution on 20th August 1992 along with other languages like Konkani and Nepali."

"Accordingly, Konkani and Nepali were included in Indian currency notes. Now, Manipuri is being taught up to MA 1st Semester in the Manipuri Script (Meetei Mayek). I, therefore, request the government through this august House to Include Manipuri Language in Manipuri Script in Indian currency notes which is the wish and long cherished dream of our Manipuri People and Hon'ble Chief Minister of Manipur Shri N. Biren Singh," Leishemba added.

 

It needs mention here that the languages on the Indian currency notes are displayed in alphabetical order. Languages included on the panel are Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
