MANIPUR:INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING OBSERVED

Senapati District Social Welfare Department observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today at DRDA hall Senapati.

In his key note address, DSWO,Senapati,Shri JK Makabo, said International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observe on 26th June every year,the obsevation is being prepond for one day in Senapati as the District will be oberving "Go To Village" program of the State Government tommorrow, he further said that this year the day is being obseved under the theme, "listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe".Talking about drug control he said drug control started in the year 1909 at Shangai in China but the real emphasis was taken up by the UN General Assembly in December 1987. The United Nation by resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

He also said that dispites continued and increased efforts the illicit drugs continue to pose a threat to the health of human soceity.and requested to all to join hands and say no to drugs and make Senapati district an illicit drug free District.

Speaking as the Cheif Guest, Deputy Commissioner, Shri. Somorjit Salam said that today's odservation was important for each one of us as drug abuse and trafficking is affecting each one us and the soceity in large. He said that each one of us should pledge ourself to fight this menace. He also said that we should be vigilant and report any incidents related to drug abuse and trafficking to the concerned authorities. He further asked the Church, Communities and the CSOs to ostracize such people who are involved in such illegal activities so to deter them from doing so. Mentioning the recent case of poppy plantations being destroyed by the government ,he asked every one to report if any one come across such areas in the district or any where else in the state so that imediate action can be taken. He also assured that the informer's indentity will in kept confidential.

As part of today's program an extempore speech competition of school students were also was also held.Todays program was also attended by S.L. Rangsong, Zonal Education Officer, Senapati district as the fuctional president, DLOs and other dignitaries.
