Manipur’s COVID death toll crosses 550 marks; Pvt hospital stops admitting patients lacking oxygen

IMPHAL: Manipur’s COVID-19 death toll has climbed up to 552, with 16 people being succumbing to the infected in the past 24 hours.

On the other hand, the state reported 726 fresh cases of COVID-19 during the period, bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 38,322.

Cases have steadily increased in Manipur over the last few weeks as a fierce second wave of the pandemic sweeps the region.

The country’s healthcare system has been plagued by an outbreak of diseases, resulting in a serious oxygen shortage, with patients dying outside hospitals, in ambulances, and in parking lots as they gasp for air.

A private hospital in Manipur‘s capital city of Imphal suspended new patient admissions indefinitely yesterday, citing a shortage of medical oxygen due to an increase in coronavirus cases.

Raj Medicity’s Medical Superintendent Narendra Singh stated in a notice to the hospital’s top executives that the hospital would only be able to provide casualty and emergency services for the time being.

The notice went on to say, “All concerned are requested to bear the inconvenience caused.”

According to reports, Manipur was facing an acute shortage of oxygen supplies.

“At least 200 cylinders that can be sent to Assam for refilling are required by the state,” an official said, adding that this will help the hospitals get through the current crisis.

The state currently has 5898 active COVID cases, while 31872 COVID patients have so far been recovered in the state till yesterday.
