Maoist leader Tingraj Orang surrenders in Assam

GUWAHATI: Tingraj Orang (49) the top maoist leader surrenders before Assam Police Tuesday.

He surrendered before Hiren Chandra Nath, Additional Director General of Police, Special Branch, in Guwahati.

Orang was in charge of expanding the base of proscribed outfit CPI (Maoist) in Brahmaputra and Barak valleys before he surrendered to police.

According to officials, Orang was the convener of the Assam state organising committee of CPI (Maoist), which was formed following a meeting of the Eastern Regional Bureau held on Jharkhand-Odisha border in 2017.

A former president of the Adivasi Chah Janagoshti Suraksha Committee, Orang formally joined the CPI (Maoist) in 2006 after meeting Kishan Da (ERB chief).

As per reports, the 49-year-old leader was the General Secretary of the Barak and Bramhaputra Valley zonal committees of CPI (Maoist) in Assam.

Orang, who hails from Samuktola village in Dibrugarh district, did not lay down any arms or ammunition.

His surrender is a major setback for CPI (Maoist) in Assam and the ASOC would be leaderless, a police statement said.

The Maoist leader, who belongs to the Tea garden community, underwent training in the deep forest of Jharkhand. 

In 2011, he was arrested from the Sundergarh district of Orissa and brought to Assam.  He was released on bail later. 

He went back to jungles after stepped out of the jail and remained elusive since then.
