JORHAT: The nomination of Mariani Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Alok Ghosh was rejected after scrutiny today.

Ghosh, who was a BJP worker till Ramani Tanti was awarded the party ticket a few days ago for the Assam assembly elections 2021, had switched side to AJP and had filed his nomination yesterday.

Although the returning officer was yet to issue a statement, sources said Ghosh's candidature was rejected due to irregularities in his documents.

Repeated efforts to contact Ghosh for his comments proved futile.

Ghosh's switch was AJP itself was taken with a pinch of salt by many in view of the facty that he had all along been opposing Assamese regionalism, the plank on which the AJP was floated a few months ago under the leadership of former All Assam Students' Union general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

Mariani has been a strong Congress bastion for decades together and the BJP-Asom Gana Parishad alliance has vowed to win it this time. On the other hand, the AJP-Raijor Dal who have all along been projecting themselves as alternatives to the BJP and Congress at Dispur, have pitched both Ghosh as well as Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi in the seat.
