BHUBANESWAR: In a unique initiative to serve the needy and the underprivileged, a doctor in Odisha has opened a One Rupee clinic to treat the poor and underprivileged.

 

The ‘One Rupee’ clinic has been opened by Dr. Shankar Ramchandani, an assistant professor in the department of Medicine at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), at Burla town in Sambalpur district of Odisha.

 

The clinic has brought in reprieve to many underprivileged and needy people of Odisha after being enabled to get treatment at just Re 1 as fee.

 

The clinic was inaugurated on February 12 and on the first day the clinic witnessed footfall of as many as 33 patients.

Dr. Ramchandani said he joined VIMSAR as a senior resident who were not allowed to do private practice. Therefore, he could not start the ‘One Rupee’ clinic. But when he was promoted as assistant professor recently he has started the private practice and commissioned the clinic in a rented house after his duty hours.

 

He said, One Rupee clinic was his dream and his wife Sikha Ramchandani, who is also a dental surgeon, helping him in initiating it.

 

The clinic will remain open from 7 am to 8 am in the mornings and 6 pm to 7 pm in the evenings at the Kachha Market area in Burla town.
