Meghalaya awaits SC verdict to resume coal mining

Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 14, 2018:

Meghalaya’s wait for resumption of coal mining seems to be far from over as the Supreme Court on Monday postponed hearing on the case against the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) ban on coal mining in the State to 27th August.
The court decided to postpone the hearing on the case as it could not study the proposals the Central government had come up with in this regard due to paucity of time.
The State government had petitioned the Centre to exempt Meghalaya from the purview of the Central mining laws.
The NGT had banned “rat-hole” mining of coal in Meghalaya in 2014.
