SHILLONG: South Shillong Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sanbor Shullai has sought the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) heritage tag for Khongthong in Meghalaya, known as only ‘whistling village’ in the country where residents often communicate with each other by whistling.

Besides their formal names, locals of the village also have ‘whistling names’ which are used for communicating with each other.

Khongthong is a very unique village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

It is popularly known as the singing village because of "Jingrwai Iawbei"(musical tune) which they create to call each other.

Lawmaker Shullai has recently put forward his demand to India’s representative to UNESCO Executive Board Professor J S Rajput to accord intangible cultural heritage tag to the remote village in the district.

Taking up the matter through the Union ministry of cultural affairs, Professor Rajput has assured all possible help for the village.

Shullai also met Rajya Sabha MP Rakesh Sinha, who had adopted the village and ensured the implementation of government schemes, including road and health services, for the people.
