Responding to queries on illegal coal mining and transportation, Sangma said that the Meghalaya government was strictly monitoring the scene in various parts of the state.

The Chief Minister said, “From the administration side, we have created different task forces in different locations. From the government's side, we have been very committed to make sure that these kinds of activities do not take place.”

He added that there could have been incidents of illegal coal mining and transportation in the state that could have skipped notice of the government. “But whenever such things happen, action is taken from our side,” said Sangma.

The Meghalaya CM informed about the latest development in the state in order to curb coal mining issues. “For the first time we have ensured that provisions under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulations) Act (MMDR), are applicable. Now there can be imprisonment upto 5 years.”
