Meghalaya CM Interacts with Garo Brethren in Nagaland

Kohima, February 2, 2020:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who is currently on a tour of Nagaland state, met his Garo brethren from Nagaland in the state's commercial hub Dimapur and interacted with them.

Taking to social media, Sangma wrote, "Met with our party members at the beautiful Niathu Resort in Dimapur where I was treated to a wonderful lunch. It was a pleasure to meet and interact with our Garo brothers and sisters from Dimapur and members of the women and youth wing of NPP."

The Meghalaya Government has conducted various outreach programmes to connect the Garos living in the state with those living in other parts of the country.

In November last, a 20-member delegation from Meghalaya met and connected with Garos dwelling in neighboring country Bangladesh.

Tweeting about the interaction, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had written, “I am glad that I got an opportunity to connect with Garo community of Bangladesh as my friend Jewel Areng, MP (Bangladesh) organised a get together programme during my visit to Dhaka.”

According to Banglapedia.com the present population size of Garo in Bengladesh is 150,000. They live in the districts of Tangail, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Sunamganj, Sylhet and Gazipur with a highest concentration in Haluaghat and Dhobaura upazilas of Mymensingh, Durgapur and Kalmakanda upazilas of Netrokona, Nalitabari and Jhenaigati upazilas of Sherpur and Madhupur upazila of Tangail district.

Garos are predominantly found in the Indian state of Meghalaya, and there are nearly a million Garos dwelling in India.
