Shillong, September 7, 2019:

Continuing their crusade against plastics, the Meghalaya Government on Saturday conducted a clean-up drive that was headed by the Meghalaya CM, Conrad Sangma, himself.

This was part of a new initiative launched by the Government. The Meghalaya announced that the newly-launched #ShillongMyPassion is a movement of the people. "It is the beginning of a revolution that will move forward and continue only through its people", he said in a tweet.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister also took part in cleaning himself, and stick in hand, he joined the people of Shillong in cleaning a polluted water body in the city.

Sangma also took his commitment to eradicating plastics to a whole new level, as he announced on a sidelines of a programme here, he said that, "the plastic that you actually throw into the river, finds its way into the body", adding that "there are some pieces (of plastis) in the oceans, which are as large as countries."

"We are keen to ensure that our rivers are rejuvenated", he said, adding, "Let the movement be a collective responsibility for all of us to make Shillong clean and healthier."

Earlier on Friday, Sangma has kicked off the ‘Meghalaya Plastic Challenge’. Announcing this on Twitter, Conrad wrote, “I’m happy to launch the Meghalaya Plastic Challenge, an initiative close to the heart of many Meghalayans to join the global fight for eradication of plastic waste.”
