SHILLONG: The chief minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma has vowed to look for help from the central government if the Assam government's proposed Cow Protection Bill has a serious affect on the state's economy.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government will introduce the law in the state assembly's forthcoming budget session, which begun today.

Assam's new Cow Protection Bill, which intends to prohibit cattle transit or use of the state has created a problem for its Christian-majority neighbours state.

In Christian-majority states like Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, beef is very popular. Cattle from all around the country travels through Assam to the states.

While Christian-majority states such as Nagaland and Mizoram have yet to respond to the proposed bill, the Meghalaya government has stated that if Assam's Cow Protection Bill harms the people and economy of Meghalaya, it will seek intervention from the Centre.

Sangma stated that if there is an issue that will harm the people and economy of the state, it will be taken up not only with the Assam government but also with the central government.

CM Sangma said,  “we are aware of the specific law that the Assam government is considering. We have established initial contact with the states that supply us with cattle which are West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. In most cases, travel and transportation into the state from other states should not be a problem."

He stated that all measures would be made to ensure that the transit of cattle headed for Meghalaya would not be hampered as a result of the Assam law.
