SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Government has declared a complete lockdown in East Khasi Hills from today in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the state.

A notification issued on the same by Isawanda Laloo, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills has directed the citizens not to panic or throng the markets from today as essential commodities will still be made available to all the citizens of the district.

It was also instructed to the headmen and local authorities to actively regulate and work out an appropriate system of making essential commodities available door to door and also to make sure that no one steps out except for the essential purposes.

The notification has cleared for some stringent measures and reiterated not to use this lockdown as an opportunity for hosting dinners, parties and picnic or visiting neighbours which are against the containment protocol.

Meghalaya has registered 906 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours and 470 people have been recovered from the disease.

As many as 19 patients have succumbed to the virus during the period.

Active cases of the state stand at 5332.
