SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cabinet today gave its nod to holding the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on April 9 and counting on April 14.

The cabinet meeting was chaired by chief minister Conrad K Sangma, here today.

The Garo Hill districts will go to polls from 7 am to 4 pm on April 9.

The GHADC comprises 30 members, including one member nominated by the governor.

Talking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said the draft electoral rolls will be published on February 4 and February 18 will be the last date for filing of claims and objections.

The claims and objections will be disposal of on March 1, he added.

Tynsong said the notification for the polls will be issued on March 8, and the model code of conduct will come into force from that day.

The filing of nomination papers by the candidates will start on March 8 and the last date for filing of nominations will be March 15. The nominations will be scrutinized at 3 pm on March 15, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be March 19.

The five-year term of the GHADC expired on October 18 last year, but the elections could not be held in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The GHADC was handed over to the governor for six months which will end on April 18.
