SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday has informed that three committees have been constituted by the Government to study and submit detailed reports on the disputed areas along the Assam – Meghalaya border.
He said that Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong will head the committee for Ri-bhoi district, which will include three other MLAs from the area, including Deputy Commissioner as member secretary. The committee will inspect the disputed area in the district and submit its reports.
Similarly in West Khasi Hills, Cabinet Minister Renikton Lyngdoh will head the committee, which will include MLAs and DCs of the district. In East Jaintia Hills, Cabinet Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar will head the committee along with Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, and two other MLAs and DC of the district.
Chief Minister informed that Assam has also notified a similar committee and have initiated the works, and once the report comes up, there will be joint visits and the two State governments will meet again.
On allegation by the leader of opposition Dr Mukul Sangma that Meghalaya Human Rights Commission should not have been given the responsibility to probe into the killing of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, as MHRC is mandated to probe the killing anyways, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday said that there is no such law or that prohibit chairperson of MHRC to probe.
“MHRC probe will limit to human rights aspects, but the judicial probe which is being done as per the Commission of Enquiry Act will give more powers as far as probe and the term of reference for the investigation is concerned,” said the CM
He also said that since the chairperson of Human Rights Commission has been given the responsibility to probe, there is more to gain as far as investigation is concerned because he will take into consideration human rights as well as all the other matters that need to be investigated.
