SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has extended the lockdown in East Khasi Hills from 5 am of May 17 to 5 am of May 24.

A review meeting chaired by state chief minister Conrad K Sangma took the decision yesterday after the state reported an all-time single-day high of 591 cases and 18 deaths due to COVID-19.

  class="css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0"> in East Khasi Hills till 24th May 2021," CM Sangma tweeted after taking the decision.

The lockdown in East Khasi Hills, the worst-affected district in the state was supposed to end at 5 am on May 17. Lockdown was initially imposed from May 5 to May 10 and later, extended to May 17.

According to reports, the meeting also discussed enforcing a curfew or complete lockdown to sever the transmission chain, however, the government wanted to wait a few more days because of the vaccination campaign for people aged 18 to 44, which started from today and will continue till May 17.
