Former Meghalaya MLA sentenced to 25 years in jail for raping minor

SHILLONG: Julius Dorphang, former Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) Chairman and Mawhati MLA, was sentenced to 25 years in imprisonment for raping a minor on December 15, 2016, by a special judge of POCSO Court at Nongpoh.

Reportedly, Dorphong's lawyer Kishore Gautam to file an appeal before the High Court as well as for suspension of the issued sentence.

Dorphong was nabbed in 2017 for raping a 14-year-old when he was a sitting MLA, booked under the POCSO Act and Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act. He was granted bail in 2020 on medical ground and rearrested on August 13 this year and tried at the POCSO court.

Dorphang was the founder and chairman of the HNLC outfit before he surrendered before the police in 2007. He later contested assembly elections and won from Mawahati assembly election in the Ri-Bhoi district in 2013.
