Meghalaya to Observe 3-Days Mourning for Donkupar Roy, Declares State Holiday on July 31

Shillong, July 29, 2019:

The mortal remains of Meghalaya Speaker, Dr Donkupar Roy, who passed away on Sunday, were brought back to Meghalaya capital Shillong early in the morning on Monday.

His body has been brought to his official residence in Shillong and then will be taken to his constituency — Shella on July 30. His funeral will be held on July 31.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Chief secretary has informed that all state government offices throughout the state shall observe three days state mourning from July 29 till 31.

During the period of state mourning, the National Flag will be flown at Half mast on government buildings throughout the state where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment during the period of mourning.

All state government offices and all revenue and magisterial courts and educational institutions in Meghalaya will remain closed on July 31 as a mark of respect for the departed leader.

The state funeral of Dr Donkupar Roy will be held at Sohra on July 31. The Burial will be at Shella on the same day.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has offered his condolences to the departed leader.

A statement released by the Chief Minister read: "With profound grief and sorrow, I deeply mourn the sad and sudden demise of Donkupar Roy, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and elected member of Shella Legislative Assembly Constituency, who passed away on the 28th of July 2019. With his passing away today, the State has lost a great leader who had dedicated his life for the service of the people. His demise is a huge loss for the State. In this moment of grief and mourning, I on behalf of myself, the Government and the people of Meghalaya, convey our sincere and deepest condolences to all members of the bereaved family, friends and his close associates and pray that God Almighty grant them the strength and solace to be able to bear this irreparable loss. I wish the departed soul an eternal peace."
