Shillong, March 31, 2020:

As the entire nation's eyes remain glued to the Nizamuddin area in New Delhi where 24 positive cases of the coronavirus have been detected so far, the Northeast Indian State of Shillong, Meghalaya, has confirmed that none of the people from the state who went to attend the Tablighi Jamaat congregation have returned to the State.

In an official statement undersigned by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (A), it was stated that of the 7 members of the Shillong Markaz who attented the meet, are still stuck in other states. While 5 are still in Delhi, 2 of them are now reportedly in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh which borders Delhi.

Further, the information about the presence of these members in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh has been relayed to the concerned officials.

This has also been corroborated by the Shillong Markaz, which has stated that the persons have been "stuck" in New Delhi amid the 21-day nationwide lockdown imposed by the Government to tackle the threat posed by the corona.

The seven persons who attended the Tablighi Jamaat meet from Meghalaya are: Md Nabil, Md Akhtar, Md Ziyad, Md Fayaz, Ataur Rahman, Minaz Uddin, and Md Sakid.

Over 2,000 delegates, including from Indonesia and Malaysia, attended the Tabligh-e-Jamaat congregation in Nizamuddin West from March 1-15, officials said as the south Delhi neighbourhood was virtually sealed. The Government of New Delhi, meanwhile, has evacuated as many as 1,500 from the area, and many have been sent for screenings.

The infections were reportedly caused by preachers who attended the event from Indonesia, and now, the area, which houses the mosque has been cordoned off by officials. Meanwhile, several deaths have also been reported. It has been reported that 40 of Telangana's 71 cases are directly or indirectly linked to the gathering, with six of the patients having died already. Another one, a preacher from J&K, has also died.

In Andaman and Nicobar islands, to the southernmost tip of India, six of the nine cases reported so far have links to the event.

Meanwhile, the mosque has released a statement in which it says, "never violated any provision of law, and always tried to act with compassion and reason towards the visitors who came to Delhi from different states. It did not let them violate the medical guidelines by thronging ISBTs (bus stops) or roaming on streets."

The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has registered  a case against the preacher who led the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi and others for violating government orders and exposing many to the threat of coronavirus. Maulana Saad and others members of the Tablighi Jamaat have been booked under the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897 and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for violation of government directions given to the management of Markaz (centre) in Basti Nizamuddin regarding restrictions on social, political and religious gathering and not taking safety measures.
