Imphal (Manipur), Aug 13, 2018:

Activists of the Working Group of Meira Paibi Movement and Joint Action Committee Against Custodial Killings staged a dharna at Khoyathong Bazaar here on Sunday demanding investigation into the alleged custodial deaths of Gurumayum Jiteshwar Sharma, Thangjam Satish, Thounaojam Prem, RK Ranel and Phijam Naobi by the Indian Army.

Speaking on the occasion, Poirei Leimarol president Longjam Memchoubi alleged that the Indian Army, which is the law-enforcing agency in the State, was misusing its powers.

According to her, many women had been raped and youngsters killed, leading to increase in the number of widows in Manipur. And this kind of human rights violation has created lots of frustration among the youth in the State, leading to further turmoil, she added.

Memchoubi accused the Indian Army of killing many in cold-blooded manner by taking advantage of and misusing the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA).

Out of the five victims, the bodies of Satish and Jiteshwar were still untraceable till date and their family members are demanding their mortal remains for performing last rites on them, she added.

The women activists demanded withdrawal of AFSPA from Manipur and asserted not to give up their protest until justice was delivered.
