GUWAHATI: Mira Borthakur Goswami, a former BJP spokesperson who defected to the Congress earlier this year, is likely to be handed the ticket from either Jalukbari or Guwahati West for the polls.

This comes after she was unexpectedly denied a party ticket from Guwahati East Constituency. Instead, the Congress handed the ticket to Ashima Bordoloi, who is the granddaughter of Gopinath Bordoloi.

According to reports, Borthakur is currently in touch with Congress' manifesto committee chairman Gaurav Gogoi, who has said that discussions are on to decide which Constituencies can be handed to her. She has also revealed to InsideNE that party leader Ripun Bora has urged her to contest from Jalukbari, the fortress of Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

"Although Mira Borthakur has been given the option of contesting from Guwahati West or Jalukbar, Borthakur believes that she has not done enough homework in those Constituencies to be a series contender," a reliable source told InsideNE.

Borthakur, it needs mention here, had gone against the party lines to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act, which has become the Congress party's poll plank ahead of the election.

Yesterday night, the Congress party released a list of 21 candidates for the third phase of Assam Assembly Election 2021.

The list apparently left aspirant Mira Borthakur devastated once again after she switched side from the BJP to Congress only with a hope that she would be the Guwahati East candidate.

The party is contesting the Assam Assembly Elections in alliance with the AIUDF, BPF, CPI(M), CPI, CPI-ML, and the Anchalik Gana Morcha. While the grand old party is contesting from 90 Constituencies, its allies will be contesting in 36 Constituencies.

The party had earlier released three lists which consisted of the names of 40, three, and 26 candidates respectively. The latest list takes the total number of candidates to 90.
