Mizo couple attacked in Cachar district along Assam-Mizoram border

AIZAWL: Barely two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting of all Northeastern state chief ministers in Shillong to discuss the inter–state boundary disputes in the region, a couple from Mizoram was attacked by a mob in the Assam side in Cachar district today afternoon in a fresh case of violence.

The incident took place when the couple was on their way back to Mizoram from Assam.

A mob of over a hundred people manhandled the couple, ransacked their belongings and completely damaged their car.

The couple sustained injuries in the attack.

A team of Assam Police was seen using tear gas and blank fire to take control of the situation.

Meanwhile, in order to stop the incursion along the border area, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to look into the matter at the earliest.

On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister also took to Twitter and expressed disappointment with the circumstance.

Assam-Mizoram shares approximately 164.6 km long inter-state border with each other. The matter of border tension between the states has been a long due unresolved issue.

Assam Government data shows that there are a total of 290 cases of encroachment in Assam since 2016 by neighbouring states, out of which, Mizoram is responsible for 42 encroachment cases in Cachar (25), Hailakandi (16), and Karimganj (1) districts.
