AIZAWL: Amid rising tensions along the Assam-Mizoram border, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga has denounced the "cowardly attack on innocent Mizos" by miscreants at Gharmura in Hailakandi district of Assam.

"The Mizo National Front's Legislature Party Meeting held today condemns the cowardly attack on innocent Mizos by miscreants at Gharmura, Hailakandi District, Assam. I denounce this vile act of violence against children, women and men," the chief minister wrote in a tweet in which he tagged his Assam counterpart Sarbananda Sonowal, prime minister Narendra Modi, and Union home minister Amit Shah.

On the other hand, Assam's media has reported that more than 54 dwellings have been

allegedly set ablaze by the Mizo miscreants.

Assamese locals said that Mizoram IR Battalion jawans were present with guns when the miscreants lit the fire on one after another house.

Amid the rise in tensions, hundreds of local residents reportedly left their houses with bags and baggage to escape the violence.

According to reports, some people affiliated with the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) approached a construction site in the region and asked the contractor to stop the work immediately.

Villagers explained to them that the work was being done under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and they should not obstruct in this manner. Tensions escalated and soon turned into an all-out brawl, with both parties resorting to blows.

Although the MZP officials were turned back, they soon returned in greater numbers and continued their spat with the Assamese locals.
