Guwahati, February 14, 2020:
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has reportedly been assigned the task of bringing peace to all Northeast Indian States by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
During a recent visit to Churachandpur district in Manipur, Zoramthanga has declared that he has been assigned to usher in peace in the region and reach out to Northeast Indian rebel groups, especially the ones in Manipur and Assam.
During the recently held Zo Kutpui held at Churachandpur’s Kawnpui village, Zoramthanga said that Central leaders from Vajpayee to Modi and Amit Shah have asked him to find a deal that could bail the region out of its insurgency problem. It may be mentioned here that Zoramthanga is a one-time rebel and took active participation in the Mizo Freedom Movement.
Reacting to this, Manipur’s Deputy CM Y Joykumar told Inside Northeast, “I welcome Zoramthanga’s effort, but neither I nor the CM have been informed about this development. However, I don’t think that this effort will go very far towards attaining peace in the region. To understand Manipuri militancy, an in-depth knowledge of the region’s militancy and the demands of the outfits must be known. Moreover, Mizoram is a peaceful state and I don’t think it has anything in common with the home-grown insurgent groups in Manipur or even the NSCN (IM), for that matter.”
