Guwahati. September 9, 2019:

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Monday brought up the issue of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill while delivering a gathering at the fourth Conclave of the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), an umbrella of political parties in the Northeast.

Opposing the implementation of the Bill, Zoramthanga expressed that the "is a very sensitive issue" for the people of the Northeast. He further warned that 'regional parties' who have supported it, have committed political suicide. "Northeast should be excluded from the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill", he told the gathering, of which Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also a part.

He also urged the Central Government to consider the 'vulnerability' of the Northeastern region, before re-introducing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Meanwhile, the NEDA Convenor and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that the Bill will most likely be re-introduced in the next Parliamentary session.

It may be mentioned that many people of Mizoram, headed by the apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), took to the streets in protest after the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha earlier this year. Some Mizos even expressed a wish to leave India and become a part of China.

Many of the organizations who protested against the Bill, have threatened to carry out protests again if it is re-introduced.
