Mizoram reports its first COVID-19 case with Delta variant

Mizoram state has reported its first case of the Delta Variant (B.1.617.2) of COVID-19 confirmed by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday.

AIZAWL: Mizoram state has reported its first case of the Delta Variant (B.1.617.2) of COVID-19 confirmed by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Friday.

“ZMC has been sending covid 19 positive samples from Mizoram to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG) for Whole Genome Sequencing to see if the Variant strain has entered Mizoram. It was discovered that four of the recently sent covid samples from Mizoram have the Variant strain, with all of the strains being B.1.617.2 (Delta Strain),” said Dr. Pachuau Lalmalsawma, IDSP Surveillance Officer, State Nodal Officer on COVID-19.

He added that hese four samples belong to men between the ages of 18 and 45.

Delta Plus is a mutated version of the 'Delta' variant that is primarily responsible for India's second COVID-19 outbreak.

COVID-19's highly infectious Delta variant (B.1.617.2), which was discovered in India in December 2020 is thought to have mutated into the Delta Plus form, which has a 50% higher transmission rate than normal COVID-19.

According to IDSP Surveillance Officer, a person infected with Delta variant has nearly three times (2.61) chance of being hospitalised.
