LONGPUIGHAT: The tribal villagers of Mizoram's Lawngtlai district have demanded a primary health centre in the district in view of rising cases of COVID-19.

In a joint petition submitted to Dr R. Lalthangliana, health minister of Mizoram yesterday, the

Longpuighat I and II Village Council presidents and NGOs requested the district's Primary Health Centre to be made operational immediately.

This has come after the Longpuighat I and II reported 312 positive cases of COVID-19 and the patients were being kept at the local Community COVID Care Centre.

The petition also stated that besides COVID-19 infection other tribal villagers are also suffering from various diseases However, the patients are not getting any medical care.

“Due to total lockdown (Longpuighat having been declared a red zone), the patients

are not being able to get treatment due to lack of any doctor or nurse at the village.

The Primary Health Centre at Longpuighat is lying defunct and closed”, stated Mr

Sudhir Tongchangya, Joint Secretary of Joint VLTF Committee of Longpuighat.

“The situation is getting more serious by the passing day. Longpuighat and its

neighbouring area is presently full of sick people, who are not getting any kind of

treatment”, he further stated.

The joint petition demanded the health minister to dispatch a team of medical doctors as soon as possible, along with the necessary medical supplies, to Longpuighat to treat both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients.

Furthermore, they mended to make the Longpuighat PHC functional by deploying a sufficient number of MBBS doctors, nurses, and health workers, as well as providing basic life-saving medicines to prevent unnecessary deaths and hardships of the tribal people in the locality.
