Mizoram's opposition party ZPM’s Lalduhoma wins Serchip assembly bypoll

AIZAWL: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)'s Lalduhoma has won the bye-elections to the Serchhip Assembly Constituency by defeating opponent,the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF)'s Vanlalzawma by a margin of 3,310 votes.

Lalduhoma won the bypoll by securing 8269 votes which is 51% of the total 16,595 votes cast.

Vanlalzawma received 5,319 votes, while PC Laltlansanga, a Congress candidate, received 2,604 votes. Lalhriatrenga Chhangte, a BJP candidate, received 250 votes.

The counting of votes began at 8 am abiding by all strict COVID-19 protocols.

The bypoll was held on April 17 resulting in 83 % voter turnout.

Following Lalduhoma's disqualification for "losing the character of an independent legislator," bye-elections to the Serchhip Assembly Constituency were necessitated.

The 71-year-old who was elected as an independent candidate from the Serchhip constituency in the 2018 elections disqualified as an MLA (ZPM) on the grounds that he had proclaimed himself as a leader of the political party Zoram People's Movement.

While disqualifying Lalduhoma, Mizoram Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo said, "He was elected as an Independent MLA, but he lost that character because of the declaration."

He is possibly the only politician in the world who has been disqualified as a member of both the House of Commons and the Legislative Assembly.

Apart from the ZPM MLAs, the MNF has 27 members, the Congress has five, and the BJP has one in the 40-member assembly.
