Mob attacks forest dept officials in Kokrajhar amid Bihu, 6 injured

KOKRAJHAR: 6 forest department officials were injured in an attack by a mob attempting to occupy its land in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Wednesday. Retaliating to the attack, the personnel opened fire, an official said. However, no casualty was reported in the firing.

The incident which took place at Goraibazar village near Indo-Bhutan Border saw a mob gathered near the village trying to occupy forest land. After being alerted, mployees of the forest department reached the spot and asked them to clear the area.

They refused and attacked the team members leaving six of them injured, the official said. An official vehicle was damaged in the attack. Officials said that at least 16 persons were arrested.

“Sharp weapons, vehicles and other incriminating items were seized from their possession. A similar incident had also happened a month back. However, this group is new. An investigation is on to dig more,” an official said.

The forest department personnel then opened fire to disperse the mob while a police team also reached the village to deter the miscreants.
