Guwahati, December 24, 2019:

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad today said, “The more controversies you bring, the more states you will lose,” hinting at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) shocking loss in the recently-held Jharkhand Assembly elections.

While addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Azad was speaking about the BJP’s way of functioning and how it is gradually leading to its defeat in the Hindi heartland. “They lost Jharkhand, they will lose Delhi also. The BJP does not believe in democracy. They don’t want democracy to thrive. This is their normal way of working,” said Azad.

The Congress leader also informed his stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and accused the government of diving the country on the basis of religion and caste. “They divided the Northeast from the rest of the country first and fearing that the entire Northeast will come together, they divided these states. Innerline Permit, Article 371, Sixth schedule, etc. There are a number of things that the BJP has been saying publicly but when it comes to the Bill, we cannot be certain about anything,” he said.

Azad highlighted the country’s economy and the increasing prices of petrol, diesel, and vegetables. “India is facing the highest unemployment in the past 40 years. The central government has not done anything, except lying. They are trying to divert people from the actual concerns of the country. Unemployement, rising prices, rising crimes against women, these are the real issues,” he said.

He further added that the BJP-led government was busy spending taxpayers' money on the advertisements, rather than investing in actual work. He cited the example of the gighly-publicized Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme and said that only 20-30 percent amount has been allotted for the scheme.
