BHURAGAON: The accused in the rape and murder case of a 9-year-old minor in Morigaon district of Middle Assam has been arrested by Assam police, said Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.

The accused has been identified as Syed Ali (65) who is a former priest of a mosque. Ali is a resident of the same village as the victim.

According to reports, the interrogation is underway, and the inspecting officers have been instructed to prepare a case file.

Sharing the development on social media site Facebook DGP  Mahanta wrote,"Arrested 65-year-old Syed Ali, the main accused of heinous, inhuman rape and murder in Bhuragaon last night. A 9-year-old child from the same area was the victim of this crime. Ali's jera is going on I am telling the inspecting officers to make a case file without a clue, so that culprit does not escape from lack of evidence."

The minor girl who is from a religious minority community was raped and murdered on June 20 in Bhuragaon, Morigaon district.

She was raped and brutally killed by unidentified men and the body of the 9-year-old girl was recovered from a roadside jute field in Balidonga village under Bhuragaon police station in the district.

Earlier yesterday, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, paid a visit to the family members of the victim and assured that the family would get justice fast and said it should act as a deterrent against the commission of a crime against women.
