Guwahati, May 6, 2019:

A 12-hour Assam Bandh has been called on 8 May by the Assam Musalman Swayatya Parisad Demand Samiti, a Muslim organization. The bandh will begin at 5 am in the morning on Wednesday.

The organization's leader and former MLA Rasul Haque said that the bandh will be called because of many instances of discrimination against the Muslim community such as the incident in Biswanath where a Muslim man called Shaukat Ali was fed pork for allegedly selling beef. He also complained that the Chief Minister has not taken any actions against MLAs Prashanta Phukan and Shiladitya Dev for their allegedly discriminatory statements.

While speaking Inside Northeast, Haque said: "We don't think BJP will allow us to observe Roja if re-elected, so we are calling a bandh now."

It may be mentioned that the Gauhati High Court had earlier banned bandhs as they tend to disrupt life and cause losses to local businesses.
