Guwahati, July 28, 2019:

Assam Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Minority Wing Chief Mominul Awal has raised quite a few eyebrows stating that the words 'Jai Shri Ram' can be enunciated by Muslims as well.

This statement of the BJP leader has stirred up a controversy as these words have seen a renewed meaning post the mob lynchings and harassment the minority community is facing due to alleged goons of the RSS, the ideological brothers of the ruling BJP party, forcing people to chant the slogan.

There is no restriction for saying Jai Shree Raam by Muslims, he said. Awal further stated that Muslims can say 'Jai Shri Ram' as Ramchandra, the hero of the 'Ramayana' was a great king who established the 'Ram State'.

"So for saying Jai Shri Ram, there is no limitation. Muslims can even shout slogans in support of Hanauman, Christ, Sankardev. Some people are creating controversy for no reason, by alleging that this Government only cares about Hindus", he said.

While speaking to Inside Northeast, Awal said: "Ram is God for Hindus, but for other communities, he is a great person. We can hail him as he was a great person, greatest in hi his era, a just and kind King."

Speaking about mob lynchings, he said: "People who are doing this, they are wrong. However, I don't think Muslims should fear these words, as we all look upto Ram for his ideals."
