GUWAHATI: After a gap of 550 days, jailed MLA Akhil Gogoi was permitted by the court to step out of the bars to finally meet his ailing mother and son.

Even though the court granted him parole for 48 hours, Gogoi is not allowed to interact the public and his constituents during the period. His request was granted after he applied for the permission to meet his family and constituents last month.

Shantanu Borthakur, Gogoi’s lawyer had earlier informed that his son had just recovered from COVID-19 and his mother has not been keeping too well. Gogoi stepped out of the GMCH on Friday evening and spend the night with his family and son.

Before leaving for Jorhat on Saturday, Gogoi expressed his excitement to unite with his mother by saying, “I am going to meet my mother. I will just put my head on her lap and spend time with her. It’s been a long time.”

Gogoi was escorted by a police team on his journey to Jorhat. People gathered near his house to get a glimpse of the leader. They cheered him once he arrived.

After finally meeting his mother, the KMSS leader said expressed that he used to breakdown whenever he would see his mother on TV crying, fighting and yearning for him.

"I could never stop my tears whenever I used to see her on TV. My mother is my life. I can’t live without my mother. She took care of my father after he met with an accident. She raised my elder brother and four sisters. What she has done to get me out of the jail, it’s inexplicable", said an emotional Gogoi.

Giving his mother the credit for his revolutionary spirit, the legislator said that it is her bravery that kept him going during the tough time.

Talking about maintaining a balance his role as an MLA and as a revolutionary, Gogoi said that "I don’t regret my revolutionary spirit. But yes..I will filter my ways. I will change my ways. But I will never be diverted from my goal."

Gogoi appealed the court to allow him a break of 15 days however he was granted only two days to meet his son and mother.  Reacting on NIA's decision, he said  "I can't possibly criticise the court because I know that they are highly pressurized by the government."

However, he did express disappointment on the authorities for releasing him late after the permission was granted.

"They deliberately released me late so that I don't get time with the public", he said.

Commenting on his victory, Gogoi said that he never expected to be an MLA and not even in his wildest dreams he expected to win the polls from Jail. "I am surprised how a constituency voted for me without even meeting me or seeing me".

He gave the credit of his victory to his mother who despite her old age, relentlessly campaigned for her son.

Gogoi further extended his apology to the people of his constituency as he couldn't visit the place. However, he assured that as an MLA he would work towards making Sivasagar a tourist destination and a heritage city.

He said that he would spend the rest of the time he has with his mother.
