Myanmar military kills 25 in clash with anti-Junta fighters

NAYPYIDAW: As many as 25 anti-junta fighters and civilians were killed in a confrontation of opponents of the military at a town in central Myanmar, said villagers yesterday, as civilians continuously taking arms against the generals who seized power on February 1 this year from the elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Civilians in many places have constituted "defense forces" to take up arms against the State Administration Council.

The latest violence has taken place on Friday in Depayin township in the central Sagaing region, about 300 km (200 miles) north of the capital, Naypyidaw.

The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar stated that “armed terrorists” had ambushed security forces patrolling there, killing one and wounding six. It added further that the attackers retreated after the security forces retaliated.

Reportedly, young people from a local Defence Force took up positions to confront the generals. However, they only had makeshift weapons and were forced back by the security forces’ heavier firepower, the resident said.
